If you were my spouse, would you feel that my family was a burden?

Wednesday Oct 28, 2009

This is kind of a weird question and situation, but the majority of my immediate family (mother, fa ther, brother, aunts and grandmother) do not have transportation. Either they can’t afford transportation, are too old to drive, feel like they’re too old to drive, don’t know how to drive, don’t have drivers licenses, or simply choose not to own a car. On the other hand, my husband’s parents have transportation (although his father doesn’t drive due to medical reasons) so he is not used to anything like this.

When we have family gatherings I am usually responsible for transporting my grandmother (who obviously can’t help her situation), a couple of my aunts, my mom (if she’s in town) and my brother (who doesn’t know how to drive and doesn’t seem interested in learning how). If my husband does decide to participate, he usually takes his own car to avoid dealing with picking up and dropping off people. It’s also an annoyance when you have to wait until everyone gets done eat or is ready to go.

On top of all of this, I do drive and have driven for many years, but I no longer drive on the highway. I got into a bad accident in 1995 that totally demolished my car. Although I walked away with minimal injuries, I started experiencing panic attacks in 2000 and stopped driving on the highway altogether in 2001. For the most part I am able to get wherever I need to go via back roads. But when my mother comes to town she needs someone to pick her up and drop her off at the airport, and my husband is the one she asks.

We have been married for five years and my husband has transported her back and forth throughout the years. On two occasions, I just paid for her to take a shuttle to the airport so I wouldn’t have to burden him with it because he works 12 hours (and now around 13-15 hours) four to five times per week. But that poses a whole nother issue because although my husband won’t say anything, I know it bothers him. We have an issue with certain family members always asking me to borrow money, or "expecting" us to have money because we both work and they think we have money. My mom is on a fixed income and gets around $650 per month, but I really think my husband feels used.

There are other relatives who have cars but when it comes to us, they expect that we take care of everything involving my mom becuase they feel we are financially able to do so or should do it just because. So I think my husband has some hidden resentment about this entire situation, but he’s the type who doesn’t want to offend anyone (including me).
*** Edit ***

My dad called last week saying he needs a ride to go get some things out of a storage unit my grandmother had been storing for him. It’s a long story, but he’s on drugs and has been for many years. Although he appears to be functional, I limit my involvement with him becaues if I show even the slightest bit of compassion he will start counting on me for a ride whenever he needs one (has happened before).

For me to take him via back roads would be about 45 minutes. It takes about 20-25 minutes on the highway. He asked if me or my husband would take him. I don’t want to ask my husband because I already know he doesn’t want to be bothered with this. It’s my responsibility. But I’ve gotten to the point to where I hate anyone to ask for anything … and then I feel bad because I feel I’m being selfish. But this whole "I don’t have a car" thing has gotten so old.
*** Edit 2 ***

I cut off lending out $5 here and $20 there several years ago. My answer is always, "I don’t have it" yet certain people still ask. I guess they feel there will be a small chance I’ll say yes once if they keep wearing me down.

I’m shocked his resentment is still hidden. Your family needs to start arranging their own transportation and you need to get therapy for your panic attacks so you can drive on the highway again.

How to stop panic attacks?

Wednesday Oct 28, 2009

I’ve had panic attacks every day for the past 2 months and I’m really on the point to g o nuts. Has anyone managed to overcome panic attacks using a natural method?

I’m still on medication which seems to be non-effective for me. Please help !

Yes, learn to trust the LORD.
Cut out caffeine and sugar or at least cut down, get some exercise.
The first will help you stop worrying, the second will help with the heath part of it.

how do you meditate or learn the correct breathing to prevent a panic attack? or even feeling stressed out?

Wednesday Oct 28, 2009

learn the breathing first. you have to breath through your diaphram. if you`re doing it right your stomach expands as you breath in. breath in through your nose for a count of 4, then out through your mouth for a count of 5. takes practice but don`t give up

Whats the best way to deal with Panic Attacks?

Wednesday Oct 28, 2009

Xanax (alprazolam) and Ativan (lorezapam) are both very effective, but not without side-effects. If you are on the drugs and you are not getting relief, talk to your doctor.

However, since you are asking the question…I am assume you don’t have any meds available. Given that; here is what to do…

1. Immerse yourself in something that will change your thought pattern. Put on headphones and listen to your favorite music, play with your pets, talk to a friend, spouse, whatever.

2. Do whatever you can to remind yourself that what you are feeling is in response to something THAT IS NOT REAL! A panic attack is a response to a situation that does not exist.

3. Talk to your doctor. Make sure he knows what you are going through. If he discounts you, if he says you just need to relax…fire him and find a new one. panic attacks are a very real illness that needs very real treatment.

Best of luck to you. I hope this helps.

How can I stop having panic attacks at work?

Tuesday Oct 27, 2009

I work as a cashier and at times I start breathing hard, sweating, and I feel like crying. I just feel overwhelmed in a weird way and my stomach starts to hurt really badly. Could it be from just being around people? I also being to feel nervous when getting ready for work. I feel like crying when getting ready…any way I can stop this? (without a therapist or anything?)

keep a bottle of water with you. breathe slowly, in through your nose, out through your mouth.
dont act dramatic, you dont want to scare the customers
think about that at the end of the day you will be free, and fine
if you can, chew gum

To all people who suffer from panic attacks…?

To all people who suffer from panic attacks

I am looking for ways to relieve, help, or otherwise "deal with" panic attacks . What do you do to prevent panic attacks ? Have you found a way to successfully talk yourself out of panic? Have you tried psychotherapy for panic and did it work? Do you find that telling others about your panic attacks helps or makes it worse?

I do have a prescription for Xanax but I don’t want to rely on them. What do you do?

I am going to go see a psychotherapist – the Xanax are just for the really bad moments where I am completely debilitated.

For me, the best ways to get rid of panic attacks are going outside as you can get some fresh air. Going somewhere quiet (maybe with someone you’re close to) helps as it gives you time to think and calm down. I haven’t tried psychotherapy, but my panic attacks have decreased a lot from several times a week to one or two every few months. Telling others definitely helps as they would understand and would be prepared if you did have a panic attack.

One thing you shouldn’t do is to try to escape from situations that give you panic attacks , because the longer you stay away from them, the worse you feel about being put in that situation again. It’s best to confront your feelings.

Also, if you are in a place where you feel panicky, it’s best to stay near the door so there’s an escape route if you do have a panic attack.

which do you personally find the hardest to deal with: panic attacks or anxiety attacks?

Tuesday Oct 27, 2009

Hey… Victoria here, maybe my personal story can give you some solace…

a lil about me- about a year after my husband left me and my daughter died about 5 years ago.. I was at a very difficult point in my life, and was ultimately diagnosed with depression, severe anxiety, and panic disorder. I would say that i’ve always for the most part been a little depressed and had some degree of anxiety, but this just completely tipped the scale. I remember there were days on end I would just lie in bed, and whenever I would be in a social environment my anxiety would go through the roof and I would often have panic attacks . Therapy never seemed to be effective for me, and my psych put me on damn near every med out there. I’ve been on everything from wellbutrin to paxil, zoloft, prozac, lexapro, celexa, buspar, valium, klonopin, xanax.. etc. Sometimes 2-3 different ones in combo at the same time. Nothing really seemed to work for me. With the exception of some of the benzos (klono./xanax) .. these worked well for a little while, but I grew tolerance quickly, and became highly addicted.

Then one day while researching online i came across this reputable looking website http://www.anxiety.pcti-system.com .. which talked about this program to eliminate your anxiety for good, all naturally. Long story short, I wound up signing up to try it and the program worked amazing.. Not only do I no longer have panic attacks and anxiety gone, but my depression has also seemed to dissipate a little. And I’m currently starting to slowly ween off the meds I’m on. >>>>

I would personally say that possibly the biggest driving factor in all this is OCD. I think obsessing and constantly having your thoughts focused on your own condition and constantly analyzing your own thoughts/actions plays a very significant role in the persistence of our ails. Almost like the condition is a small lit fire, and OCD is the fuel that keeps it consistently burning… Also, I’ve come to the conclusion that meds are generally a unhealthy short term cure that only semi-treats the symptoms, and never the cause. Hope I was of some help!
