Anyone who has ever had a panic attack knows how life stopping these events can feel. A panic attack can seriously hurt your quality of life by causing you become terrified of a repeat episode. This terror is just another negative side effect of panic attacks, and you should learn to think of it as such so that you can get on with your life without the constant fear of a panic attack hanging over your head. Worrying about having a panic attack all the time might even cause you to trigger panic attacks later.

Panic attacks feel a lot like heart attacks. A panic attack might cause your heart to race, and it might cause you to become short of breath. You might find that you feel dizzy or light headed, and they are characterized with the feeling of life or death importance. It is not uncommon to believe that you are dying or about to die when you are having a panic attack. Fortunately for sufferers, they are usually not of a long duration, and will stop when they have run their course, usually a few minutes, or when the cause of the panic is removed.

If you are terrified that you might have another panic attack, you may just end up cutting yourself off from everything in order to avoid having another. You might hide from the world, or otherwise separate yourself from the friends and family who might otherwise be able to help you. If this sounds familiar to you, then you need to consider seeking professional help to empower you to dispel the threat of panic attacks that hangs over your head.

You may also be able to help yourself by avoiding the situations that cause you to have your panic attacks in the first place. One of the biggest causes of panic attacks is stress, and if you are constantly in stressful situation, then you will be at a much higher risk for panic attacks in the future. This stress is not necessarily the stress that comes over a few days over a particular event; panic attacks are triggered by constant stress over a period of months or sometimes even longer. This stress is often too much for people to bear, and even if we do not realize that, our bodies do, and they rebel.

Panic attacks can also be caused by certain situations. If you get a panic attack every time you are running late, or stuck in traffic, or going over a bridge, then you need to make sure to avoid those situations to prevent these same events from triggering more panic attacks in the future. You can take a different route to work, leave early, and avoid roads that you know will be snarled with traffic or even head to a local place for dinner after work before facing the drive home.

If you practice avoiding panic attacks and chart where you were, what you were doing, and how you felt immediately prior to each panic attack, then you can use this information to avoid the things that trigger you. You may be able to save yourself a lot of trouble with your mental and even your physical health later down the road.

Panic attacks do not just feel remarkably like heart attacks; recent studies have linked experiencing panic attacks with an increased likelihood of actually having a heart attack later. Keep your odds low and keep your stress levels down to avoid panic attacks and to remain as healthy as possible. No one likes to suffer, and panic attacks certainly fall into the category of suffering.

If you are at risk for panic attacks or you have had them in the past, then you should examine the past causes of your panic attacks so that you can help yourself to avoid similar situations in the future. You should also get in contact with your doctor to find out if you may need medication or therapy to help you take charge of your life and get away from the panic attacks . It can be difficult to determine exactly the best means of preventing panic attacks, but you may get better results when pairing the practice of avoiding triggers with medication to help you feel calmer. A therapist can also help you learn mental tricks to help you ride through the panic attacks without completely losing your cool the next time you feel one coming on.

It started a couple years ago where I felt like I was going to choke at a restaurant. Ever since then I get panic attacks . I contimplate whether or not I should go out. I think about everything that could happen, like me having a panic attack.

My mind goes crazy with all kinds of thoughts. I try to clear my mind but I can’t. I have learned how to get through the attacks myself, but I hate having them. I am depressed one day then fine the next. I get angered easily. I can’t even wear earrings anymore because I have thoughts of me ripping them out of my ears… If a pencil is in my hand and I get stressed I imagine myself poking into my eye… I feel like a nut!! What’s wrong with my brain? I was fine before this. I just can’t stop thinking about me getting all freaked out. It’s me doing it to myself. I am putting all of these crazy thoughts into my head but I don’t know how to stop. I look at others and think… hmmm they are normal…. Help!

Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. The following steps will eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks :

1.Breathe properly – if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks , OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks , mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really make a difference if you practise often enough (i.e. twice a day). They will also help you sleep better if done at bedtime. You can get free downloads online. E.g.: http://www.studentservices.utas.edu.au/counselling/audio_resources/index.html

With each step practice makes perfect. (i.e. practice the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!

I won’t stop b9tching until I learn about some SATISFYING ways of dealing with these people. Just ignoring it or trying to make the world a better place doesn’t cut it, because these aholes annoy me, and I in no shape way or form am going to stand for it,

PERIOD.

For example, whenever I land in the ER due to a bad illness, I usually complain about it alot, or tell them exactly what’s wrong, and they basically just "Judge" my behavior/attitude, how old I am, like all the shallow stuff they see, and focus more on my mental health/attitude, how I’m overblowing it, and treat me like I’m some sort of a crazy person.

They expect you to be this good little patient, who fits into society’s perfect mold, if you’re an adult male you should be doing this and that, if you’re a female of the same age, where are your children? and if you’re not like me, I tend to be an individual, free-spirited, I just don’t give a f8ck person..then they just judge you, and you’re the enemy.

Last night I had a really bad anxiety/panic attack, so I had to go into the ER, and the paramedics who brought me there were first acting all nice to me, but just because I was in a bad mood, and wasn’t all happy/gleeful like they were, they picked up on that and immediately just got defensive around me, like I was the bad guy.

I even tried to start small talk like "hi so is this your job, how do you like it, we’re happy to have you guys, etc" but the response I got back was like…yep and no answers and they just looked annoyed.

When they checked me out they were like "ok ur totally normal, but your anxiety/panic is out of control and its affecting your behavior, so you need to talk to a counselor," and I said I already know that, and it’s nothing personal I just freak out when I’m sick or dealing with something, why can’t you people understand that? lol. Is it so abnormal? I don’t care of my age,..that’s ageism, I dont’ care if I’m a guy, that’s sexism, I’m allowed to act any d@mn way I please as long as it’s legal, and there’s NOTHING illegal about being in a friggin bad mood.

The people at the hospital, with all the questioning got SO judgemental and just weird. It’s like they go into details, like why didn’t you do this, why do you have this gap in your work experience, and all these personal judgemental questions, like they’re your mother and father, and then they insert their own judgements like "Have you ever hit a dog, etc because I can’t stand people that do," and and I’m like wow, well If I don’t come across like your perfect little patient, you’re going to treat me negatively, so whatever.

I just feel like they judge you, and expect you to be this perfect little conformist sheep that’s got it all together and is leading a really great life, solid job history, solid everything, and since I’m not like that and I don’t have a perfect track record,

I automatically get treated condescendingly and like I’m some sort of a crazy person.

Even on her way out, this nurse who looked anoyed with me said sarcastically and a bit angry, "good luck to you…." and walked away.

I really doubt if these people were hiring anywhere, that I’d even remotely stand a chance.

I can’t stand them, and I’m not one of those phony people who pretend that it’s all good man! So how do you deal with them?

I’m NOT changing. I like how I am.

Um so why did you go to the hospital for an anxiety attack anyways? That is if you have a history of it and you know that’s what it is. I actually never understand why people go to the hospital for an anxiety attack. Just go to a dark room, slow your breathing down, wind down and let it end. That is all that EMS or the hospital will do for you. Also no one is trying to make you "conform". They asked you some of those questions like "have you ever hit a dog" etc as part of a psychological evaluation. They are trying to figure out if you are just having an anxiety attack and not having other problems going on like hallucinations. They also asked to make sure you are not homicidal or suicidal.
So I am sorry if this does not sound very nice. but maybe next time you should stop being so damn paranoid and let the EMS and hospital staff help you. No one is judging you. Hell honestly no one really cares, you are most like likely 1 of the hundreds of the many neurotic patients they will see that day.

hi i’m a 24 male living in new york. my fiancee left me for her ex-boyfriend a month ago. the same guy she left too be with me. we’ve been living together for 3 years and been together for 5 man this hurts… i cant stop crying im not the crying type but i find myself releasing tears silently on my way too work at work, home everywhere. i know i’m supposed to be over it and she’s not thinking about me why am i thinking about her. i heard everything there is too hear about this situation from friends and family, but… she was my world i wake up with out direction sometimes like learning too walk again. i get panic attacks like ill never experience someone like her again or love in general, i’ve come too the conclusion that women and relationships are not for me… im not gay (no offense) i just don’t want be responsible for abusing my heart anymore " i’ve been cheated on before, she said she never will and i believed her STUPID ME!" i just think now being a coward is the best resolve.

Hey there,

sounds like you are feeling pretty low right now.

Don’t punish yourself because it hurts! You spent a long time together and were quite young when you started out, so she might have been your first love. That’s been a HUGE part of your life.

We can get very comfortable with people who are in our lives for a long while, and it does take time to get used to their absence if they leave.

Sadly whatever she did to her ex she also did to you, so that’s a good tip for your next relationship. If a girl does something low to another guy, imagine her doing it to you and pass her by!

It’s ok to grieve and feel bad. That’s natural. Take some time to recover from this. Get to know yourself again. Eventually you’ll be able to think about your future plans and work towards them. Don’t worry if you’re not ready yet.

I find it helps to have a good cry and pinpoint what it is about the person you miss and that hurts, & that the pain passes more quickly if I face it.

I was like you I trusted the WORDS and the ACTIONS never followed. I was extremely hurt and it took a long time to see the truth. Now I’m a little wiser – Words are not the best way to judge a person. Actions are the best way to know who they are. And now I look at their past to see what is likely to happen with them in the future.

Sounds like deep down you knew she wasn’t ideal, but you carried on and hoped it would work out anyway. You’re not alone in doing that.

One day you will realise you are still special and loved even without a girlfriend. And next time you choose more wisely and you won’t be in this sad place again. For now give yourself a break.

blessu

I have quit cannabis now for 10 days to this date i no for a fact i will not start smoking it again its a mind game totally i quit and the first day was easy i didn’t want a spliff but obviously my body does need the chemicals i went to my local GP and said i have quit the cannabis for 4 days at the time and the doctor heard my heartbeat and it was something like 90 bpm then he prescribed me some tablets called beta blockers which slowed my heart down :s i was on them for about 3 days and everyday i was on them my appetite went down i felt dizzy all day every day and was quit emotional so i decided i couldn’t keep feeling like this so stopped them the next day and after stopping them i felt my appetite was coming back slowly and i wasn’t feeling drowsy all day so i would suggest that try not to take medication if you can be strong. back to the panic situation like i say this is the 10th day and i get the odd occasional feelings that a panic is coming but i have learned to take deep breaths right to the stomach and think of a happy place lol i sound like a right mental patient but if anyone wants some personal experience advice or you have any advice for me at all then i would be happy to help no problem you can send me a private email on stokesy118247@live.co.uk and i would appreciate any advice you could give me stay cool and take care all of you :)

Hey… Victoria here, maybe my personal story can give you some solace…

a lil about me- about a year after my husband left me and my daughter died about 5 years ago.. I was at a very difficult point in my life, and was ultimately diagnosed with depression, severe anxiety, and panic disorder. I would say that i’ve always for the most part been a little depressed and had some degree of anxiety, but this just completely tipped the scale. I remember there were days on end I would just lie in bed, and whenever I would be in a social environment my anxiety would go through the roof and I would often have panic attacks . Therapy never seemed to be effective for me, and my psych put me on damn near every med out there. I’ve been on everything from wellbutrin to paxil, zoloft, prozac, lexapro, celexa, buspar, valium, klonopin, xanax.. etc. Sometimes 2-3 different ones in combo at the same time. Nothing really seemed to work for me. With the exception of some of the benzos (klono./xanax) .. these worked well for a little while, but I grew tolerance quickly, and became highly addicted.

Then one day while researching online i came across this reputable looking website http://www.anxiety.pcti-system.com .. which talked about this program to eliminate your anxiety for good, all naturally. Long story short, I wound up signing up to try it and the program worked amazing.. Not only do I no longer have panic attacks and anxiety gone, but my depression has also seemed to dissipate a little. And I’m currently starting to slowly ween off the meds I’m on. >>>>

I would personally say that possibly the biggest driving factor in all this is OCD. I think obsessing and constantly having your thoughts focused on your own condition and constantly analyzing your own thoughts/actions plays a very significant role in the persistence of our ails. Almost like the condition is a small lit fire, and OCD is the fuel that keeps it consistently burning… Also, I’ve come to the conclusion that meds are generally a unhealthy short term cure that only semi-treats the symptoms, and never the cause. Hope I was of some help!
