Now, I find that they are beyond my control, and sometimes cannot be stopped. They also wake me up, in the middle of the night. How should I deal with this?

Start with your family doctor.

panic attacks can also be physiological. You should have a thorough blood panel done checking thyroid activity. If you’re waking-up with these symptoms, it’s unlikely that it’s anxiety.

I have always suffered from horrible anxiety attacks, and nothing seems to help. I have been given different types of medicines for it but they seem to only temporarily fix the problem. Recently, one of my neighbors informed me that he has the same problem and his doctor suggested having a pet as therapy for it. I have heard of this before. Is this true? Can a pet really be good for these types of things? And if so, do doctors really "prescribe" pets?

Well, all I know is that my 2 dogs, 1 bird and a guinea pig all make my life a happier one. Animals bring love and companionship in a way people just can’t. Animals don’t judge you, don’t yell, don’t manipulate or put demands on you. All they want is to love and be loved. I have many medical issues as well as severe anxiety, and it really does help having animals around. My dogs seem to know when I am feeling extra bad/depressed and when that happens they don’t leave my side.

I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder and lately I’ve been having really sev ere panic attacks . It’s come to the point where I avoid everything. I’ve been going to therapy for almost five years now. I try to tell myself that nothing bad is going to happen to me but I just end up panicking more. I’ve also tried some abdominal breathing techniques. Any other suggestions?
Thank you for your answers. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one suffering from this but it’s really reassuring to know that others have gone through this as well.

I was taught by one of my nurses when I was in a nursing home last year a way to stop my panic attacks and so far it has worked for me everytime.
She told me to take a slow breath in and keep breathing in through my nose as much as I could until I could take in no more air……..then take one more breath. She said to hold it for as long as I could and then slowly let it out….as much as I could possibly let out………and then let out one more breath. She told me to do this at least 8-10 times.
As I said, it worked for me and I hope that it works for you.
Good Luck.

In general stay away from benzodiazepines (valium, xanax, etc) though, an antidepressant doesn’t work as fast but will be much more helpful in the long run. If you need to use an occassional benzo try Ativan.

I have my first ever psychotherapy appointment today and I have been having a major panic attack all day about it.

Im at work so it’s not like I can go sit and meditate or anything but at this rate I am going to talk myself out of going.

Any tips/tricks/advice/kind words???

I felt the same way before my first appointment with my therapist. It turns out that he’s very kind, patient, and understanding. Going to your therapist will be like talking to anyone else, except he will not judge you no matter what you say.

When you start to panic, remind yourself to ask yourself, "What’s the worst thing that can happen?" In this case, maybe you won’t like your therapist. Maybe you’ll freeze up and have trouble talking. Maybe you’ll say something goofy. You can deal with any of these things, if they were to happen. Again, your therapist has heard people say the goofiest things imaginable so I doubt anything you say will faze him.

Don’t skip your appointment, honey. It’ll be so worth it. After your appointment is over, reward yourself for doing something you were so afraid to do and remind yourself that real life isn’t as scary as we fear it to be in our minds.

I suffer from panic attacks and mild agoraphobia. Currently I am seeing a Psychologist who is working with me using Cognitive Behavior Therapy but I have seen him only one time. My last major panic att ack which is my first was back in December of last year. Ever since then, most of everyday I have a problem with shortness of breath, a choking feeling in my throat, dizzyness, feelings of faint, having a tight band on my head, headaches and visions problems like squinting and burning of the eyes. This is beginning to be bothersome to me and it feels like it would trigger a panic attack and of course, I dont want this to happen. Does anyone have a cure to this? I’ve been perscribed Zanax for my immediate panic attacks and later perscribed Klonopin for everyday use. I have not used my Klonopin yet because of mixed feelings about it. Does this medication help with this? I heard that relaxation exercises work to cure this. If so, where can I find out how to do it? Any info is appreciated.

I Know exactly what you are talkig about. A panic attac can be a really scary thing to experience. I remember the firat one I ewver had. I was sitting in a board meating at work. The room was kind of small, and there were too many people cramed in. I was sitting there, the room was quiet because the meeting had yet to start. All of a sudden I started to notice I was begining to breath kind of heavy. Then I started to break out in a sweat. Then the room felt like it was closing in on me. I had to run out of the room and head towards the mens room. As I was walking I felt like my heart was going to pound out of my chest, and my head was going to explode. I could actually hear the blood swishing through my veins in my forehead. I thought O was going to die right there at work. Then as sudden as it all started, it all just stopped. I was never so scared in my life.

I went the medication/therapist route, but the meds made me feel like a zombie. Klonopin was one of the meds I was taking. I would suggest you stay away from it. You should work with your Dr. to find something else. After sitting through way to many shrink sessions, I was sitting in the waiting room waiting for another round of sessions. That is where it hit me. I took a good look around the room at all of the other people sitting there. A vast majority of them appeared to have real mental problems. It is right then that I said to my self, What the heck am I doing here? There is nothing wrong with me. I am stronger than these panic attacks. I got up, told the lady at the front desk I could not stay for my appointment, and never had another panic attack.

Whenever I felt one coming on, I just mentally would not allow my self to have one. I learned to control the attacks instead of the attacks controling me.

You really do have the power in you to overcome panic attacks . You can be stronger the the urge to freak out. It takes a while, but it can be done. I am living proof.

I wish you the best of luck on overcoming this bump in your road of life. Stay strong, you can do it!

The obvious answer is to use a paper bag, but I don’t always find that that works. I get panic attacks a lot and I recite lists of things. I know that sounds weird, but I go through all the winners of the Royal Rumble (I am a wrestling fan) or do some complicated maths or something. It sounds like it won’t work, but trust me, it does because it distracts your mind. Pick something you like to concentrate on. Also, herbal remedies work, even though I really REALLY don’t believe in that kind of thing, they actually do.

The next time I had one, was when I smoked weed with a couple friends while driving, but i don’t smoke like I used to. But I’d never had a panic attack smoking before, I used to smoke everyday a year ago more than once a day sometimes, and I’ve never experienced this. The next time I had a panic attack was when I started school a couple weeks ago. I felt fine on my way there, but after 5 minutes of being there, I started breathing heavy, felt extremely nauseas, felt like fainting, could hear my own heart beat, and my hands were sweaty. I used to be so social with people and i could say anything I wanted to anyone, and now I can’t even talk to strangers. I didn’t end up going back to school, in fear of having another attack. The next attack was the next day after school when I was thinking about getting in the car with my friends who I’d driven with before. I had to have my sister give me a ride to where I was going because I was so nervous. I started going to therapy again and learned some deep breathing exercises, but they don’t really help. Fortunately, I’m going back to school in a couple days, but I’m very nervous to go because I may have an attack. Can anyone tell my why I am having attacks all of a sudden and how I can prevent or help them?
i am 19 by the way..
