I can’t seem to find how to deal with mine..
I usually just take deep breaths but sometimes they are so bad that deep breathing doesnt work.
Usually if I cry they go away but how do you make them stop coming?

You have all the answers. Your deep breathing is a really good technique, well done. Another one is to focus when you feel them coming, you will know the signs. Draw your focus inwards and tell yourself that every other time this has happened it has gone away and you have been fine and that you will be just fine this time too. Keep gently repeating this to yourself (either in your mind or softly out loud). Use this along with your breathing and it will pass. Each time with practicing this regularly you will start to realise that it is not quite as frightening, let go of thinking something horrible is going to happen if you are not in control. Good luck

Anyone who has ever had a panic attack knows how life stopping these events can feel. A panic attack can seriously hurt your quality of life by causing you become terrified of a repeat episode. This terror is just another negative side effect of panic attacks, and you should learn to think of it as such so that you can get on with your life without the constant fear of a panic attack hanging over your head. Worrying about having a panic attack all the time might even cause you to trigger panic attacks later.

Panic attacks feel a lot like heart attacks. A panic attack might cause your heart to race, and it might cause you to become short of breath. You might find that you feel dizzy or light headed, and they are characterized with the feeling of life or death importance. It is not uncommon to believe that you are dying or about to die when you are having a panic attack. Fortunately for sufferers, they are usually not of a long duration, and will stop when they have run their course, usually a few minutes, or when the cause of the panic is removed.

If you are terrified that you might have another panic attack, you may just end up cutting yourself off from everything in order to avoid having another. You might hide from the world, or otherwise separate yourself from the friends and family who might otherwise be able to help you. If this sounds familiar to you, then you need to consider seeking professional help to empower you to dispel the threat of panic attacks that hangs over your head.

You may also be able to help yourself by avoiding the situations that cause you to have your panic attacks in the first place. One of the biggest causes of panic attacks is stress, and if you are constantly in stressful situation, then you will be at a much higher risk for panic attacks in the future. This stress is not necessarily the stress that comes over a few days over a particular event; panic attacks are triggered by constant stress over a period of months or sometimes even longer. This stress is often too much for people to bear, and even if we do not realize that, our bodies do, and they rebel.

panic attacks can also be caused by certain situations. If you get a panic attack every time you are running late, or stuck in traffic, or going over a bridge, then you need to make sure to avoid those situations to prevent these same events from triggering more panic attacks in the future. You can take a different route to work, leave early, and avoid roads that you know will be snarled with traffic or even head to a local place for dinner after work before facing the drive home.

If you practice avoiding panic attacks and chart where you were, what you were doing, and how you felt immediately prior to each panic attack, then you can use this information to avoid the things that trigger you. You may be able to save yourself a lot of trouble with your mental and even your physical health later down the road.

Panic attacks do not just feel remarkably like heart attacks; recent studies have linked experiencing panic attacks with an increased likelihood of actually having a heart attack later. Keep your odds low and keep your stress levels down to avoid panic attacks and to remain as healthy as possible. No one likes to suffer, and panic attacks certainly fall into the category of suffering.

If you are at risk for panic attacks or you have had them in the past, then you should examine the past causes of your panic attacks so that you can help yourself to avoid similar situations in the future. You should also get in contact with your doctor to find out if you may need medication or therapy to help you take charge of your life and get away from the panic attacks . It can be difficult to determine exactly the best means of preventing panic attacks, but you may get better results when pairing the practice of avoiding triggers with medication to help you feel calmer. A therapist can also help you learn mental tricks to help you ride through the panic attacks without completely losing your cool the next time you feel one coming on.

It started a couple years ago where I felt like I was going to choke at a restaurnat. Ever since then I get panic attacks . I contimplate whether or not I should go out. I think about everything that could happen, like me having a panic attack.

My mind goes crazy with all kinds of thoughts. I try to clear my mind but I can’t. I have learned how to get through the attacks myself, but I hate having them. I am depressed one day then fine the next. I get angred easily. I can’t even wear earrings anymore because I have thoughts of me ripping them out of my ears… If a pencil is in my hand and I get stressed I imagine myself poking into my eye… I feel like a nut!! What’s wrong with my brain? I was fine before this. I just can’t stop thinking about me getting all freaked out. It’s me doing it to myself. I am putting all of these crazy thoughts into my head but I don’t know how to stop. I look at others and think… hmmm they are normal…. Help!

Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. The following steps will eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks :

1.Breathe properly – if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks , mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really make a difference if you practise often enough (i.e. twice a day). They will also help you sleep better if done at bedtime. You can get free downloads online. E.g.: http://www.studentservices.utas.edu.au/counselling/audio_resources/index.html

With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!

Now, I find that they are beyond my control, and sometimes cannot be stopped. They also wake me up, in the middle of the night. How should I deal with this?

Start with your family doctor.

panic attacks can also be physiological. You should have a thorough blood panel done checking thyroid activity. If you’re waking-up with these symptoms, it’s unlikely that it’s anxiety.

Before I go to sleep I often feel fairly relaxed, so it is shocking to wake up shortly after my head hits the pillow with all the classic symptoms of a panic attack, which for me usually include rapid heartbeat, hot flashes, nausea, sweating, some difficulty breathing normally, and a ’strange feeling in my head and body’, like I am relating to the world around me much differently than when I am not having an attack. The symptoms and sensations are VERY uncomfortable and distressing, and I get the attacks about three times a week on average. Stress levels in my life are fairly high, and I also suffer from significant depression.
When an attack hits, I usually say to myself, "Oh no, not again!" and try to deal with the attack best I can. They usually last about 30 minutes to an hour and then slowly subside. However, I wish they would go away, or at least lessen in frequency and severity. My usual response is to get up and walk around a bit. Lying in bed usually makes me feel worse. I also usually feel an urge to ‘flee’(the fight or flight syndrome), and if the attack is especially intense I usually leave my apartment and take a walk. I find this helps somewhat. I try as hard as I can not to overreact to the attack, but it is difficult. Even though they say "no one has died from a panic attack", etc.etc., there are studies that link frequent regular panic attacks to higher suicide rates and heart problems, so it is hard to ignore those things. A couple of times I went to the ER, but that proved to be a waste of time, as they told me I was ‘only’ having a panic attack, and I would be alright shortly. Easy for them to say. Let them experience one and know how awful it feels.
My main concern is why do my attacks ONLY happen during the early stages of my sleep? I am worried I may have a sleep abnormality that may be triggering my attacks. I’ve done some reading on ’sleep panic attacks’ and there are some things that can cause them. Usually a sleep study is ordered to find out. I may need to do that.
I would like to hear from those who suffer from these sleep panic attacks, in the way I have described, how you deal with them, any advice you can give me, etc. Also anyone in the medical profession who is familiar with what I am talking about I would also very much like to hear from.
Thanks.

I have panic attacks (not as severe as yours, but with similar symptoms) and a few times they have happened when I was falling asleep. I am sorry that I don’t know why this happens, but I can tell you how I deal with it. Usually I have the same desire to get up and move or run, but I try forcing myself not to leave the house. I stand up in my room and do some simple yoga-type stretches which usually calms me down a little. I try to focus solely on how I am breathing and after a while the attack subsides. Hope that helps a little, sorry you have to go through these I know they are terrible!

I am a sophomore in High School and I’ve been having panic attacks . Last week I suddenly was shaking, couldn’t breathe, had to go to the bathroom, and dizzy. It was the first time that happ ened to me and I was really scared. I thought it was never going to happen again but on Monday I ran out of class and to the bathroom due to one and Tuesday I also experienced a panic attack and run to the bathroom again. Today I had two. They seem to be getting worse as time goes on. I’ve just told my dad about it today and only one of my friends knows about the attacks. What I need to know is:
1. how can I deal with an attack when it happens again?
2. How should I tell my teachers so I can leave the class when they happen?
3. Where should I go during an attack?

I used to get a lot of panic attacks and suffer from lots of anxiety, I travel a lot and hate flying however because of my business I have to to keep it growing. I have been using NLP techniques and meditation and it seems to work pretty well however I have been looking at this site and reading all the success stories of people curing their panic attacks and anxiety naturally.

http://tinyurl.com/na7btb

I don’t like taking mediactions so a natrual cure to panic attacks is great fpr me, so far I haven;t triued this out but it seems lots of other folks have with great success, if anyone has tried please let me know how you get a long

I won’t stop b9tching until I learn about some SATISFYING ways of dealing with these people. Just ignoring it or trying to make the world a better place doesn’t cut it, because these aholes annoy me, and I in no shape way or form am going to stand for it,

PERIOD.

For example, whenever I land in the ER due to a bad illness, I usually complain about it alot, or tell them exactly what’s wrong, and they basically just "Judge" my behavior/attitude, how old I am, like all the shallow stuff they see, and focus more on my mental health/attitude, how I’m overblowing it, and treat me like I’m some sort of a crazy person.

They expect you to be this good little patient, who fits into society’s perfect mold, if you’re an adult male you should be doing this and that, if you’re a female of the same age, where are your children? and if you’re not like me, I tend to be an individual, free-spirited, I just don’t give a f8ck person..then they just judge you, and you’re the enemy.

Last night I had a really bad anxiety/panic attack, so I had to go into the ER, and the paramedics who brought me there were first acting all nice to me, but just because I was in a bad mood, and wasn’t all happy/gleeful like they were, they picked up on that and immediately just got defensive around me, like I was the bad guy.

I even tried to start small talk like "hi so is this your job, how do you like it, we’re happy to have you guys, etc" but the response I got back was like…yep and no answers and they just looked annoyed.

When they checked me out they were like "ok ur totally normal, but your anxiety/panic is out of control and its affecting your behavior, so you need to talk to a counselor," and I said I already know that, and it’s nothing personal I just freak out when I’m sick or dealing with something, why can’t you people understand that? lol. Is it so abnormal? I don’t care of my age,..that’s ageism, I dont’ care if I’m a guy, that’s sexism, I’m allowed to act any d@mn way I please as long as it’s legal, and there’s NOTHING illegal about being in a friggin bad mood.

The people at the hospital, with all the questioning got SO judgemental and just weird. It’s like they go into details, like why didn’t you do this, why do you have this gap in your work experience, and all these personal judgemental questions, like they’re your mother and father, and then they insert their own judgements like "Have you ever hit a dog, etc because I can’t stand people that do," and and I’m like wow, well If I don’t come across like your perfect little patient, you’re going to treat me negatively, so whatever.

I just feel like they judge you, and expect you to be this perfect little conformist sheep that’s got it all together and is leading a really great life, solid job history, solid everything, and since I’m not like that and I don’t have a perfect track record,

I automatically get treated condescendingly and like I’m some sort of a crazy person.

Even on her way out, this nurse who looked anoyed with me said sarcastically and a bit angry, "good luck to you…." and walked away.

I really doubt if these people were hiring anywhere, that I’d even remotely stand a chance.

I can’t stand them, and I’m not one of those phony people who pretend that it’s all good man! So how do you deal with them?

I’m NOT changing. I like how I am.

Um so why did you go to the hospital for an anxiety attack anyways? That is if you have a history of it and you know that’s what it is. I actually never understand why people go to the hospital for an anxiety attack. Just go to a dark room, slow your breathing down, wind down and let it end. That is all that EMS or the hospital will do for you. Also no one is trying to make you "conform". They asked you some of those questions like "have you ever hit a dog" etc as part of a psychological evaluation. They are trying to figure out if you are just having an anxiety attack and not having other problems going on like hallucinations. They also asked to make sure you are not homicidal or suicidal.
So I am sorry if this does not sound very nice. but maybe next time you should stop being so damn paranoid and let the EMS and hospital staff help you. No one is judging you. Hell honestly no one really cares, you are most like likely 1 of the hundreds of the many neurotic patients they will see that day.

I have always suffered from horrible anxiety attacks, and nothing seems to help. I have been given different types of medicines for it but they seem to only temporarily fix the problem. Recently, one of my neighbors informed me that he has the same problem and his doctor suggested having a pet as therapy for it. I have heard of this before. Is this true? Can a pet really be good for these types of things? And if so, do doctors really "prescribe" pets?

Well, all I know is that my 2 dogs, 1 bird and a guinea pig all make my life a happier one. Animals bring love and companionship in a way people just can’t. Animals don’t judge you, don’t yell, don’t manipulate or put demands on you. All they want is to love and be loved. I have many medical issues as well as severe anxiety, and it really does help having animals around. My dogs seem to know when I am feeling extra bad/depressed and when that happens they don’t leave my side.

Panic attacks are sudden feelings of terror that strike without warning. These episodes can occur at any time, even during sleep. A person experiencing a panic attack may believe that he or she is having a heart attack or that death is imminent. The fear and terror that a person experiences during a panic attack are not in proportion to the true situation and may be unrelated to what is happening around them. Most people with panic attacks experience several of the following symptoms:
•"Racing" heart
•Feeling weak, faint, or dizzy
•Tingling or numbness in the hands and fingers
•Sense of terror, of impending doom or death
•Feeling sweaty or having chills
•Chest pains
•Breathing difficulties
•Feeling a loss of control
